Cannabis has a long association with eating. For years, even non-smokers knew that getting high could lead to the “munchies,” wherein a person binges on all sorts of foods and unusual flavor combinations. The association is so strong that fictional characters with large appetites, such as Shaggy and Scooby, have been associated with cannabis use in their modern portrayals.

The association isn’t purely cultural either. In the medical community, cannabis can be prescribed to patients with anorexia caused by chemotherapy or other powerful drugs. Because nutrition is a priority for patients who are seriously ill, the potential downsides of cannabis are overlooked to ensure patients receive adequate caloric intake.

Given this strong association with appetite, it may be surprising to learn that daily cannabis use is not associated with weight gain. In fact, the opposite seems to be the case. Daily use of cannabis is associated with lower BMI and a lower risk of obesity and diabetes. This could be huge news for medical cannabis advocates, as obesity-related health conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease are responsible for countless deaths and health expenses throughout the country.

Why do stoners eat more without gaining weight?

The research is too new to say for certain. Most studies examining the relationship between marijuana and weight are purely correlational, which means that researchers can establish that stoners are less likely to be obese, but unable to establish why that is the case. There could be many explanations.

One possibility is that using cannabis reduces stress. Because many people eat when they are stressed, people with high amounts of stress are more likely to eat more frequently than people who feel relaxed more often. Secondly, because the foods that most people seek out to regulate their emotions are often calorically dense and less satiating (such as packaged cookies, chips, ice cream, etc.), it may be the case that people who smoke less consume more calories on average than stoners, in spite of the munchies effect.

Another possibility is that stoners are more active than other groups. Frequent walks, bike rides, skating, rock climbing, and other activities that are popular with stoners may not be as popular with more sober populations. As a result, stoners may be able to eat more calories without gaining weight, as they use that energy to fuel their activities. Similarly, it may be that people who smoke frequently have fewer aches and pains, which allows them to be more active more frequently than others. The natural analgesic effect of marijuana can thereby encourage lower BMIs in people who smoke, by empowering them to hit the herb vape, then hit the treadmill.

Lastly, the answer may be that stoners are generally younger people, as people tend to smoke less as they age, for career and family-related reasons. Young people generally have less fat on their frame and gain weight as they age, making this another case of correlation (though it doesn’t necessarily signify causation).

Stoners drink less.

While many stoners love to get cross-faded, many cannabis users eschew alcohol entirely, or enjoy it in much more moderation than people who drink but do not smoke. Because stoners may be more likely to consume fewer alcoholic beverages, they consume fewer calories and gain less weight as they age than drinkers. Because alcohol is so calorically dense, avoiding even just a few drinks each week can mean stoners avoid hundreds or thousands of calories in their weekly diet. That effect adds up over the years, particularly as individuals age out of adolescence.

Weed may improve your metabolism.

Some research indicates that cannabis may improve your metabolism. Smoking can stimulate cannabinoid receptor 1, which helps control metabolism and appetite. As a result, smoking cannabis can alter the body’s metabolism and reduce the amount of fat stored in the body, which, in turn, lowers an individual’s BMI.

It’s worth noting that differences in metabolism are often tiny, which may have an effect on long-term weight gain and fat storage, but minimal effect on short-term differences in fat. In other words, even if weed speeds up your metabolism, changes in diet and activity level will still have much larger effects on your weight than small differences in metabolism.

Should I smoke more to lose weight?

While some evidence suggests a relationship between cannabis use and a lower BMI, there’s not enough data for any self-respecting health professional to suggest you start using cannabis as a weight-loss drug. However, if you feel that cannabis may help alleviate your stress, increase your activity level, or otherwise help you modify the number of calories you consume and use, it may be worth putting away the box of cookies and breaking out the box of kief.

The only evidence-based way to intentionally lower body fat is by adjusting the energy balance of your body, which is composed of the calories you consume and the calories your body burns as energy. If you are interested in losing body fat, consult with a doctor or dietitian to discuss effective strategies that fit your life.

Obviously, countless people disapprove of getting high at work. Bosses hate it. The federal government strictly forbids it. Most of our managers and uncool coworkers turn their noses up at it.

But the truth is, some people require a little bit of herbal assistance to get through a day on the job. This is particularly true for jobs with little physical danger/coordination and repetitive, uninteresting labor. Anyone who has worked in an office sorting files or in a food service establishment knows exactly why they smoke on the job.

Still, how to do it? For the uninitiated, here are RYOT’s tips for a secret office smoke.

Step 1: Is Getting High a Good Decision?

Before you start sparking, you need to consider whether or not smoking on the job is a good idea for you. Will you be required to handle heavy machinery? Do you anticipate driving during the workday? Is there any chance that you or a coworker could be burned, cut, or otherwise maimed? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you should probably stay sober at work. Sorry, bud.

If the answer is no and you have a reasonable expectation of safety, the next question to ask is whether you could face negative consequences from smoking on the job. If you are a licensed professional, such as a doctor, does smoking or popping hot on a drug test compromise your license? Does your company drug test at all? If so, you may need to consider finding another way to get through the day. We hear good things about coffee and snacking.

If you feel like there’s no risk to getting stoned (for example, you work in a restaurant and your boss is smoking with you), then proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Smoke on the Go

We love bongs and dab rigs, but these elaborate setups aren’t feasible in the hustle and bustle of the modern workday. You’ll have to move to some sort of cold European country if you want to live that slower pace of life. Instead, you want a way of getting stoned that’s quick, portable, and easy to use discreetly.

We recommend products like an herb vape or a one hitter. These tools are small enough to carry in your pocket, quick to use in just one hit, and require little to no clean up. Additionally, neither is likely to cause a smell problem that needs to be cleaned up.

Some herb vapes are so unobtrusive, they can be used in a bathroom with none the wiser. A one hitter can’t be used indoors, but can easily be used outside on a lunch break. A one hitter disguised as a cigarette can even be used on the smoker’s corner outside many businesses, and nobody would suspect what you’re really up to.

Whatever your system, it’s best to try and avoid detection. Being too brazen with your habit can lead to consequences, even if your workplace is cool. Your goal is to smoke just enough to forget the soul-crushing nature of employment, without getting too high to get your work done. In our experience, even the bosses that smoke with you will let you go as soon as getting high affects your work performance.

Step 3: Clean up

If you are smoking flower, smell might be an issue to consider. A quick walk around the block or some body spray can help air out or cover the smell of weed radiating off your suddenly relaxed demeanor. You should also be sure to hide your stash and piece before returning to work. The whole “smoke secretly on the job” thing doesn’t typically work if you walk back into the office with your portable vaporizer or one hitter tucked behind your ear. Even a boss so unhip that their trousers are falling down can figure out what’s going on when you get that sloppy.

It would be a good idea to keep some cologne, eye drops, and a drink with you when you smoke, to mask the smell, red eyes, and weed breath that can happen as you smoke. Addressing these issues before returning to work keeps you completely inconspicuous. Do it right and people will just suspect you got a great cookie out of the break room vending machine.

Last Step

Use your judgment. Everyone loves to get stoned, but being sober is sometimes an unfortunate necessity for maintaining employment. We like staying employed. It’s how we pay for stuff, like, weed and burritos. As a result, we try to stay off the smoke as much as possible at work.

Hitting the pen is an occasional necessity for getting through long Zoom meetings, counting inventory, and routine tasks. When we’re “on,” we’re focused and ready to go. We hope this guide keeps the new workplace smokers out there safe and on a steady track to promotion.

Cannabis culture has grown significantly over the years, and with the legalization of marijuana in many places, it has become more mainstream than ever before. As a result, stoner couples have emerged, embracing their love for cannabis together.

Whether it’s for a special occasion, a birthday, anniversary, or just to show appreciation, finding the perfect gift for a stoner couple can be a delightful experience. This article aims to explore a wide range of gift ideas that cater to their shared passion for cannabis and enhance their high love.

Try some cannabis accessories.

Why not help the stoner in your life maximize their lifestyle by giving them some luxurious smoking gear? Weed isn’t just spliffs smoked in secret anymore, it’s on par with fine wine or tobacco. Cannabis humidors, 2 and 4 piece grinders, customized rolling trays, odor proof bags or high quality stash containers are a perfect gift for someone who enjoys quality cannabis.

Cannabis apparel to smoke in style.

Your clothes should display who you are. For the weed aficionado, why not help them express their love through their style? Weed-themed shirts, socks, and other gear can help them strut their stuff. You may find that some of their favorite shows, bands, or other interests have gear aimed at stoner audiences. What could possibly express your love for someone more than a novelty t-shirt of a cartoon character blowing fat bong clouds? It may be a little bit on the nose, but we guarantee stoners will love it.

Relax with cannabis spa packages.

This gift can be enjoyed as a couple. With the rise of CBD infused oils, teas, and other products, why not try a spa weekend? These products may be offered by local facilities in your area, but if not, buy CBD massage oils and other spa products and try a weekend at home taking care of each other. Sharing a joint, turning on some relaxing music and taking turns massaging each other is a fantastic way to relax and unwind as a couple.

Cannabis cooking classes for two.

For stoner couples who enjoy culinary adventures, a cannabis cooking class can be an exciting and educational gift. While cannabis specific classes are difficult to find in many locales, you and your partner can turn any cooking class into a cannabis cooking class with just one secret ingredient. While we don’t recommend you hijack a cooking class with your weed, you can take the recipe and adapt it to your stoner kitchen at home by substituting regular butter for cannabutter. Learning to bake perfect cherry clafoutis is a romantic way to express your love (while getting ripped).

Weed game night.

Explore the competitive side of your partner by adapting some of your favorite board games to a stoner lifestyle. Weedopoly and Settlers of Kushtan are a great way to pass countless hours as you strategize, smoke, forget what your strategy was, then give up on the game and make out instead. Alternatively, if one partner loves board games and the other doesn’t, a fine joint is a way to get through a whole board game you’d rather not play.

Subscribe to a gear box.

Surprise them with a monthly subscription to a cannabis-themed box. These boxes often contain an assortment of accessories, edibles, and other cannabis-related items. The changing products and novelty of monthly shipments will keep your stoner rolling (pun intended) in new gear.

Try the gift of art.

Add a touch of cannabis-inspired art and decor to their living space. Look for prints, paintings, or sculptures that celebrate the beauty of cannabis. Vintage editions of High Life, posters from their favorite stoner comedies like Cheech and Chong, or other pieces of art can add some style to their life, without looking like a dorm room poster.

Grow your garden.

This isn’t just a quote from Voltaire’s Candide: “We must cultivate our garden.” For a partner with a green thumb, “grow-your-own” can be an irresistible pursuit. Try giving them an opportunity to get high on their own supply.

Growing your own plants can save money at the dispensary, give a partner a hobby, and brighten up their living space or back garden. Before you give them a plant, check the local laws in your area regarding how much weed you can grow and if there are any limitations on how it’s stored or displayed. While growing weed is a time-honored pursuit, the last thing you want to give your partner is a felony.

Tour weed and wine country.

Now that weed is fully in the mainstream throughout the west coast of the US, consider a tour of weed and wine country through states like California or Washington. Many wineries cater to weed connoisseurs and offer tastings that pair wine with fine cannabis strains.

Finding the right gift is about understanding your partner’s interest and finding ways to cater to their tastes, while solidifying your relationship. The best way to find the right gift is to listen to them and take frequent notes of gaps you can fill or activities you can participate in together. Happy smoking, lovebirds.

With the rise of readily accessible (and cheap) cannabis in nearly every state, edibles have become a popular item at dispensaries nationwide. Not only are they a yummy, inexpensive way to get high, they can be measured and dosed with dependable accuracy.

While smoking comes with a variability that can occasionally send you into the stratosphere when you really just wanted to get high and clean the kitchen, edibles from reputable brands can be counted on to affect you reliably day in and day out. This is especially helpful for individuals who use cannabis for medical purposes, as they can treat edibles like medication and expect accurate results.

Though edibles are great for medical users, some people use edibles recreationally and may only get high once a month. As many edibles come with multiple doses in a pack, what do we do with the extras? How do we keep them fresh for the next blue moon that allows us to get stoned?

Invest in high quality storage

Neither a plastic baggy or crumpled brown bag is sufficient, particularly if you’re storing baked goods like brownies, cake, etc. Instead, invest in high quality stash containers or stash jars that will protect your product. Airtight, glass containers are best, as they won’t impart any off flavors to your edible treats, seal in freshness, and protect your edibles from bugs, mold, and other contaminants.

Refrigeration

For baked goods, refrigeration can help preserve your edibles for an extra week or two. Not only does refrigeration slow down the process of decay, it can help maintain soft and chewy textures.

A pan full of brownies left on the counter can dry out to an inedible brick within a day, but a tray of brownies that are covered and placed in a refrigerator can stay fresh for more than a week.

The potential pitfall with refrigeration depends on the cleanliness of your fridge. Refrigerators filled with rotting or strong-smelling food may impart unwelcome odors to your edibles. You can avoid this pitfall by keeping them sealed in an airtight stash container (see above) or by simply cleaning out your fridge.

Freeze for long term freshness

If you need to store your perishable edibles for more than a week, freezing may be a better option. The advantage to freezing is that it preserves your stash for months on end, preventing it from rotting or growing mold.

The downside is that freezing can occasionally affect the texture and taste of your edibles. The best way to avoid this is by preparing your edibles properly for long term storage. Wrapping your edibles in parchment paper or a sealed container can prevent them from picking up off flavors from the fridge.

If you can, try to position your edibles in the back of the freezer, rather than in the front, or in a shelf on the door. This positioning helps maintain a stable temperature, rather than a cycle of freezing and thawing each time the door opens. Constant thawing and freezing will exacerbate unwelcome changes in texture.

Vacuum seal your supply

Vacuum sealing is a first-rate method to maintain the freshness of your edibles. Removing the air from the packaging reduces exposure to oxygen and contamination. Invest in a quality vacuum sealer to package your edibles. Vacuum-sealed edibles can be stored in the refrigerator or freezer for long stretches of time without compromising quality. This type of packaging can keep goods fresh for months or even years.

Control humidity

You’ve seen those “do not eat” packs at the bottom of every bag of road trip beef jerky you’ve ever bought. Did you know that they control the humidity in that sealed bag? One way you can store edibles on the shelf is by placing them in an airtight container with a silica packet. The packet will absorb humidity in the packaging to help arrest mold and maintain the texture of your edibles.

Find a cool, dark place

As always, you want to protect your stash from light and heat. Refrigerators naturally keep your stash in a cool, dark place, but if you are storing your stash in an unrefrigerated area, try to find a dim area that stays between 60 and 68°F throughout the year. This will help maintain freshness and texture, particularly for edibles that are sensitive to heating and cooling cycles, such as chocolate, candy, and similar treats.

Keep an eye on it

As with any perishable product, regularly checking the freshness of your marijuana edibles is crucial. Use expiration dates as a guide for products stored on the shelf (though freezing can extend these dates significantly. The most important way to evaluate freshness is with your senses. Look for signs of decay, such as bad odors, off textures, or significant discoloration. Some changes, such as staleness, may be the result of storage, but edibles that taste or smell bad are probably best given to the garbage can.

Many edibles can be bought in bulk and stored for extended amounts of time, given the right cannabis storage accessories and a cool, dry environment. The right storage can keep them in perfect shape for slowly working through them on your own, or for when all of your friends show up for a party.

Dry Herb Vaporizer

A dry herb vaporizer! For most patients, the best way to take cannabis is to use edibles or some other oral route so that you don't damage your lungs. Some patients need faster relief, though, and some find edibles too strong.

Most of these patients end up smoking and gunking up their lungs with tar. Even though the jury's still out as to whether smoking cannabis is inevitably harmful, common sense dictates that filling your lungs up with smoke isn't ideal.

Dry herb vaporizers are very handy for patients who need immediate relief but don't want to vaporize concentrates because they're too strong or lack the other compounds found in cannabis flowers.

Instead of rolling a joint, they could vaporize the flower and get far less tar in their lungs.

This is not the ideal method of consumption. Again, edibles are best when they're well tolerated. But for those patients who insist on using an inhaled form, I think the dry herb vaporizer is a better alternative to smoking.

Volcano-type vaporizers are especially desirable because they cool the vapor in a holding chamber (usually a balloon) before it's inhaled. But you don't have to get an expensive one. There are desktop models that go for as little as $40 bucks at smoke shops.

Pollinator Grinder With Mill

That accessory would have to be my trusty pollinator grinder with mill. Let me explain why.

Firstly, the pollinator grinder with mill is an indispensable tool for any cannabis enthusiast. Its unique design and functionality make it a must-have accessory in my collection. Not only does it grind my herbs to the perfect consistency, but it also collects the precious pollen or kief that falls through the screen. This allows me to maximize the potency and flavor of my cannabis.

Secondly, the mill feature of the grinder sets it apart from other conventional grinders. With a simple twist, I can effortlessly mill my herbs into a fine powder, which is ideal for use in various cannabis-infused recipes. Whether I'm making edibles or topicals, having a pollinator grinder with a mill is a game-changer.

Moreover, the pollinator grinder with mill is built to last. Its durable construction ensures that it can withstand the rigors of daily use without any compromise in performance. This means that I can rely on it to deliver consistent results every time I use it.

Weed Pipe

My weed pipe is my essential cannabis accessory which offers me convenience, control, and a sense of ritual. Whether I'm at home unwinding or out with friends, my weed pipe allows for discreet and efficient consumption without the need for elaborate setups or additional equipment.

What I appreciate most about using a weed pipe is the level of control it provides. I have the freedom to load the desired amount of cannabis, allowing me to tailor the potency and intensity of each session to my preference. This ability to personalize my cannabis experience is a significant advantage for me.

Also, the process of packing the bowl, carefully lighting the herb, and taking that first inhale feels like a moment of mindfulness and relaxation. It adds a certain meditative quality to my cannabis sessions, making it more than just a means of consumption but also a moment of tranquility. No one can take that away from me.

If you are anything like us, you know that there are few things more pleasurable than a perfectly rolled joint. Like all art forms, your final product will only be as good as the materials used to craft it. While quality cannabis is given, have you considered that your papers may limit the quality of your rolls?

The rolling papers you use have a critical role in the way your spliffs eventually smoke. Regardless of the quality of your herb, the quality of your herb grinder, or your skill as a roller, if you smoke with garbage paper, you can expect garbage results. Papers affect the way your joints burn, how quickly, and how they taste while they’re lit. With so much on the line, we want you to have all the information you need to roll the best possible joints.

What are you burning?

There are several materials used to make rolling papers. Each has a slightly different flavor and way of burning. Try experimenting with each to figure out what’s best for your tastes and your budget.

Wood Pulp

These papers are made from processed wood pulp, which is a description roughly as appetizing as referring to a hot dog as “pork pulp.” In truth, wood pulp is a great material for rolling with, which explains their enduring popularity.. They burn evenly and stay lit, though some find the smoke is less enjoyable and can affect the flavor of their joints.

Hemp

Hemp rolling papers are made from a plant called hemp, which is one of the most sustainable crops grown. Hemp papers burn slowly and roll with ease. Most notably for cannabis smokers, hemp papers offer a flavor that readily complements their herb of choice. This is because hemp is actually just another name for cannabis, though hemp is bred primarily for its stem and fibrous plant portions rather than its flowering buds. As such, it only makes sense to use every part of the plant to roll the best possible joint.

Rice

Rice paper is thin, and new smokers might find it difficult to roll with. The benefit of rice paper is that it provides a very slight smoke with a mild flavor, which allows the flavor of your herb to fully shine on its own. Rice paper may also come with a variety of added fibers, such as flax, so it may be worthwhile to read the label when buying rice paper, to ensure you know what you’re getting.

Flavored

Flavored papers, such as Juicy Jays, Twisted Hemp, or other brands, are a popular choice among many and are made from a variety of materials. Purists may push flavored joints aside, as they eschew “additives” in favor of purely organic materials, or they may simply prefer the nuance of their herb. For those of us who like to have fun, a flavored joint can add a hint of whimsy into our lives and make it worth living.

How has your joint been treated?

Like all products, rolling papers can undergo a series of additives, processes, and additions from the time it starts as wood pulp to the time it blazes up in your hand. People who are health conscious may have some preferences surrounding what they smoke, so it’s worth looking into what processes your favorite brand has undergone.

Bleached

Bleached rolling papers are treated with chemicals to achieve their perfectly white appearance. While they are the most common papers available at convenience stores, some smokers get a little ick from the idea of smoking bleach. Though bleached papers are just as safe as their browner counterparts, they do have a slightly different flavor.

Unbleached

Unbleached rolling papers are becoming much more popular with younger smokers who are more health conscious. While unbleached papers aren’t any safer than bleached papers, they do have a fetching light-brown color, as well as a slightly different texture and flavor. Some of the most popular brands today are unbleached.

Size Matters

Rolling papers come in various sizes to accommodate different smoking preferences, namely, whether you want a delicate little spliff or a fatty joint the whole crew can pass around.

1 ¼

This is the most popular size. Most convenience stores carry these papers to accommodate tobacco smokers. A 1 ¼ is a nice medium size that can serve as a personal joint for experienced smokers or be passed among a few friends.

King Size

King-size rolling papers are larger and generally used for joints that are designed to be shared, unless you’re Willie Nelson, in which case, they are half of a joint.

Single Wide

Single wide papers are the smallest of these sizes and perfect for people who want a delicate, slim joint.

Whatever papers you use, the most important thing to look for is quality. A quality paper should roll well, without splitting, and burn evenly. The best way to find the perfect papers for you is to try a variety and see what feels, smokes, and tastes best for you and your preferences.

As we move from casual smokers buying single grams at a time to serious cannabis connoisseurs, storage becomes an increasingly important issue. As you begin to collect multiple strains and store them over the weeks, you want to make sure your stash stays fresh, sticky, and delicious. We know all about ideal marijuana storage, so we thought we’d share some of our hard-earned wisdom with our readers.

1) Figure Out Your Priorities

What’s most important to you about storing your stash? Do you want a gorgeous display case to show off your weed? Or are you trying to keep large volumes fresh for an extended time frame? Do you value portability or will your stash stay in one place? These kinds of questions narrow down the possible stash containers that would be best for your situation.

Once you have the answers, it’s time to start weighing your options and finding the best container for you. Some traits you may want to consider are: price, materials, size, and portability. We try to prioritize material as much as possible, as this will ultimately decide the quality of the container. Ziploc baggies, while cost-effective and highly portable, are simply not a quality container.

2) Protection

One of the key factors to consider is how much protection you need for your stash. For short-term storage, a glass jar with a lid is a convenient, accessible way to keep your weed fresh and on display.

If you’re looking for slightly more protection, you may consider storing your jars in a cannabis humidor. A humidor will protect your weed from light and maintain the humidity and temperature of your collection. This is a great option if you are storing your weed for longer amounts of time and want to maintain freshness as long as possible, but still want to keep your stash handy for easy smoking.

For long-term storage, air tight bags or other containers should be kept in a cool, dark place. With proper storage, weed can keep up to a year without losing its potency or smokability.

3) Smell-savers

If you are trying to store your weed in a way that manages its odor, smell-proof bags or cases are the containers for you. Not only do these containers keep the fragrant aroma of weed from escaping into the air, but they also keep that aroma in the stash, where it belongs. Maintaining that aroma makes your weed taste fresher, longer.

Smell-proof bags come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from dime bag daily carry sizes to suitcases designed to protect your whole home grow. No matter how much weed you have to store, there is a product that fits your needs.

Try to choose a container that matches the size of your stash, as too much space will still allow the smell of your herb to dissipate more than you’d like. For example, if you have a gram or two to store, try to use a small container, rather than a gallon-sized jar. A small space keeps your weed contained and properly humidified, while large spaces can lead to dry, tasteless bud.

4) Choose the right materials

You want a storage container that maintains the flavor and aroma of your stash, not one that allows it to dissipate or (worse yet) imparts off-flavors to your herb. Plastic containers, though less expensive, are often a poor choice for stash containers. Most plastics lack the ability to lock smells in, which means everyone and their dog will smell your marijuana from a mile away.

Additionally, many plastics leak their own smell into your weed, which means every joint you smoke will taste vaguely of cheap tupperware. You can avoid this problem by choosing materials like glass, carbon padding, or at the very least, food grade plastics that are designed to maintain flavor integrity.

5) Choose something stylish

The way you store your stash reflects on you. Are you an erudite smoker with a wooden humidor? Or are you a cute girly out on the town with a Playboy bunny stash bag? Find something that you can enjoy turning to time and time again. You should enjoy the way it feels and looks each time you open it or toss it to a friend.

For serious herb collectors, an appealing looking set of storage containers can make your herb an art piece that sits on your mantle. Choosing a tasteful stash container helps keep your weed fresh while displaying your personality, which allows everyone around you to celebrate both.

The most important considerations when choosing your stash box is that it maintains your stash’s aroma and humidity and protects it from light and air. As long as your chosen container accomplishes that, you can customize it to fit any of your needs for portability, style, material, or more.

The Evolving Nature of the Cannabis Industry

Starting a cannabis accessory business comes with its own unique set of challenges. Firstly, navigating the legal landscape can be complex and demanding. The legality of cannabis varies from country to country and even within different regions of the same country. It is crucial to thoroughly research and understand the laws and regulations governing the sale and distribution of cannabis-related products in the target market. Compliance with licensing requirements, age restrictions, and product labeling can be time-consuming and expensive.

Another significant challenge is the competition in the cannabis accessory industry. With the growing acceptance and legalization of cannabis, the market has become increasingly crowded. It is essential to differentiate the business from competitors and create a unique value proposition. Building a strong brand identity, offering high-quality products, and providing excellent customer service can help overcome the competition.

Finding reliable suppliers and manufacturers can be another hurdle. The cannabis accessory market requires a diverse range of products, including smoking devices, vaporizers, rolling papers, and other related items. Identifying trustworthy suppliers who can consistently deliver quality products within budgetary constraints is crucial for maintaining customer satisfaction and ensuring repeat business.

Marketing and advertising restrictions pose additional challenges. Many platforms, such as social media networks and search engines, have strict policies regarding cannabis-related content. This limits the ability to reach a wide audience through traditional marketing channels. Developing creative and compliant marketing strategies that leverage alternative platforms, influencers, and targeted advertising becomes essential for reaching the target market effectively.

The ever-evolving nature of the cannabis industry presents ongoing challenges. As legislation and regulations change, businesses must adapt to new requirements and stay abreast of industry trends.
How can you deal with it?

There are several strategies and approaches that can be employed to deal with the challenges of starting a cannabis accessory business:

Stay updated with any changes in the legal framework to adapt the business accordingly.

●	Develop a strong brand and value proposition.
Stand out from the competition by creating a unique brand identity and value proposition. Focus on providing high-quality products, exceptional customer service, and a memorable shopping experience.
●	Establish reliable supplier relationships.
Thoroughly vet potential suppliers and manufacturers to ensure they can consistently deliver quality products within your business's budget and timeline. Look for suppliers who have experience in the cannabis industry and a proven track record. Establish strong relationships with reliable suppliers to maintain a steady inventory and avoid supply chain disruptions.

●	Explore creative marketing strategies.
Due to advertising restrictions, traditional marketing channels may not be available for cannabis accessory businesses. Explore alternative marketing strategies such as influencer partnerships, content marketing, email marketing, and SEO optimization. Leverage platforms that allow cannabis-related content and explore targeted advertising options within legal constraints.

●	Stay informed and adapt to industry trends.
Continuously monitor the cannabis industry for emerging trends, technologies, and consumer preferences. Attend industry conferences, join professional networks, and engage with cannabis communities to stay updated. Be proactive in adapting the business to meet changing demands and regulations, ensuring that products and services remain relevant in the market.

●	Network and collaborate.
Build relationships with other professionals in the cannabis industry, including retailers, manufacturers, and distributors. Collaborate on joint marketing efforts, share knowledge and insights, and support each other in navigating the challenges of the industry. Networking can open doors to new opportunities and provide a support system of like-minded individuals.

●	Seek professional assistance.
If needed, consult professionals experienced in the cannabis industry, such as lawyers, accountants, and consultants. They can provide guidance on legal compliance, financial management, and overall business strategy. Their expertise can help navigate complex challenges and ensure the business is set up for success.

Securing Funding

Unfortunately, cannabis-related firms, in particular, have high startup costs. It's a smart idea to request more money than you anticipate needing because operating a cannabis business comes with a lot of unforeseen expenses. Cannabis is illegal under federal law, making it challenging to obtain small company loans. Your best choice is to carefully consider your fundraising and financing possibilities with private investors.

Additionally, be aware that the 280E provision, a particular tax on cannabis enterprises, will result in hefty federal tax obligations for you. Keep an eye on the health of your financial account. A smart idea is usually to hire an accountant.

We’ve all been there. You decide to enjoy a quiet afternoon at home, burning down blunts and getting paranoid high, when out of the blue someone asks if they can come over. Maybe it’s your token sober friend or a younger cousin for whom you try to be a positive, non-stoner example. Maybe it’s your landlord. Whoever it is, you don’t want them to know you smoke, but your house is absolutely stinking of sticky bud.

What do you do? What can you do? You can refer to our handy tips for getting rid of the smell of weed.

Avoid the smell to begin with

Sometimes the smell comes from burning that zaza, sometimes it just comes from poor zaza stash management. The easiest way to keep a space from smelling like weed is by using smell proof containers. If your stash containers are mainly plastic baggies or old bits of plastic wrap, that’s not going to cut it. Try using glass jars with lids that seal tightly. Not only does this keep the weed smell from leaking out, it keeps the delicious, mouth watering weed smell sealed in, which means a better smoke.

If glass jars aren’t your thing or you lack space for them, try a smell proof bag. These bags are made with thick materials and solid, sealable openings that don’t leak out odors. Smell proof bags come in sizes ranging from tiny keychains to backpacks, so there are plenty of options for your storage needs. Upgrading your storage is the simplest way to keep from smelling vaguely skunky while carrying on the go.

Ventilate the space

The smell of weed pervades the air because the smell of weed is in the air. All smells are carried by the air that you breathe as it passes over the olfactory bulbs in your head. The fastest way to get rid of weed smell is by opening the windows, breaking out some fans, and moving as much air through the space as possible. By exchanging the air, you decrease the number of cannabis molecules floating around your space, which in turn makes the area smell less like weed and more like fresh air.

A great way to avoid the smell in the first place is by smoking out a window to begin with. While weather doesn’t always permit us to smoke outside, blowing your smoke out a window will drastically cut down on weed smell in your house. If that’s not an option, why not try making a sploof?

Clean and deodorize

As we mentioned above, odor is caused by particulate matter that floats around in the air. Once that matter, such as smoke and bits of weed pollen, falls out of the air, what happens next? It lands on every available surface in the room, including carpets, curtains, bookshelves, and the walls themselves. Another way to cut through the odor in a room is by cleaning up and getting rid of all the weed molecules lingering around.

Vacuuming the carpet and cleaning any cloth surfaces, such as curtains, rugs, or even furniture, will have the greatest effect, as these surfaces tend to hold onto odors easily and release them for a long time. If you need to really get rid of some stank, you can try cleaning the walls with a solution of water, dish soap, and vinegar. This homemade cleaning fluid will remove some of the smoke residue that’s built up over time while simultaneously deodorizing and replacing weed smell with the smell of whatever dish soap you prefer.

Try the cover up

The last way to get rid of the smell is to cover it up with something else. This is especially effective if you’ve aired out the space and are only covering up the last lingering odors. Strongly scented candles, incense, or baking and cooking can all cover up the smell of weed. If you’re looking to achieve long-term plausible deniability, it’s best to use a scent that is somewhat close or complementary to cannabis. For example, incense smells close enough to cannabis that it melds with your home’s weed smell, but it creates a new aroma that’s not quite weedy.

Nag champa is one of the most popular types of incense used to cover up weed smell, but by now, it is so highly associated with stoner that it may be the Millennial/Gen Z equivalent of hippies and patchouli. Some great alternatives include sandalwood, cinnamon, or myrrh (as seen in the Bible!). Using incense regularly will help build up the aroma in your home, which masks the smell of cannabis. People with frequent migraines may take caution, as incense can trigger headaches in people who are sensitive to it.

If you’re looking to have a friendlier odor than incense, try baking cookies or burning some candles with scents like vanilla, cinnamon, or brown sugar. These strong odors can overpower any other unsavory scents that are leftover from those spliffs. These tips work great for other unpleasant odors too. Whether you’ve had a kitchen disaster that leaves your house smelling like the inside of a microwave, a sewer pipe that burst, or some other olfactory emergency, now you know how to make your house smell fresh again.

Infographic

Dealing with unexpected guests and a cannabis-scented home can be awkward, but there are discreet ways to fix it. Invest in airtight containers for cannabis storage, enhance ventilation, clean surfaces, and consider masking the odor with scents that complement cannabis. These methods ensure a welcoming environment while tackling unwanted odors.

Have you ever used a hiding spot for your stash that was so good, you completely forgot you had weed there? Maybe some months or years went by, then you opened up that hollowed out copy of Infinite Jest and discovered you still had a few grams tucked away. It’s the stoner equivalent of finding $20 in your winter coat. Finding surprise weed is a lovely gift from your past self, but it may leave you wondering if it’s still good. How long does weed last, anyway? Can it make you sick? RYOT has the answers!

Does weed go bad?

Yes and no. It depends on the quality of the weed and how it was stored. Weed that has been fully cured/dried that’s stored in an airtight container can last nearly indefinitely. On the other hand, buds that aren’t fully cured or were exposed to moisture and were stored in a container that left them exposed…you may want to throw those buds out. Weed that’s damp and exposed creates an ideal environment for bacteria and mold to grow in, which means you definitely don’t want to smoke it.

Will I still get high?

Now we’re getting down to business. Yes, a weed that’s quite old will still get you high, though you may notice the potency drops off as time goes by. You may also notice that the quality of the high changes. This is due to the slow degradation of the terpenes and cannabinoid compounds that affect your high. As these chemical compounds diminish or become slightly altered, so will your high.

You will also notice a definite change in the flower’s texture and smokability. It may become more brittle and difficult to roll. This is usually due to the time the weed has spent drying out. In addition, old flowers will burn much more quickly, much hotter, and much more harshly than fresh flowers. A fine grind and packing your bowl, joint, or one-hitter tightly will keep it from burning quite so quickly, as you limit the amount of oxygen available to burn through your old weed. Tight packing also makes it more difficult to get a good draw as you smoke, so you may need to pull a little harder on your spliff, pipe, or bong.

We find that smoking old herbs works best through a cool, refreshing bong. It cools the smoke and takes away much of the harshness that comes with old, dried-out buds. Alternatively, you can throw it into an herb vape, which will simply convert the THC into vapor without combusting the herb itself. Using a portable vaporizer skips all the fuss while delivering the same high.

What’s the best way to store bud?

This depends on your intention. How much, bud, and for how long? Do you want to maintain the flower, or are you comfortable with extracts? How much work are you willing to do? If you just want to store a few grams while you’re away on a long vacation, an airtight stash container is the best way to seal in your weed’s freshness. Mason jars are popular, as they come in a variety of sizes and are easy to organize.

For large amounts of flower, such as ounces and pounds, it’s difficult to find airtight jars large enough to handle that kind of volume. Your best bet would be bags designed for long-term storage. You can use vacuum sealer machines and compatible bags, which are sold in most kitchen supply stores. These machines will remove any air from your stash and protect it from humidity, bacteria, and bugs. The downside to vacuum sealing is that the pressure tends to crush the flower, somewhat affecting the way it breaks down. On the other hand, flat, vacuum-sealed bags of weed are stackable and slide easily under beds or into pantries, drawers, and crawl spaces.

For the ultimate storage and discretion, check out our smell-proof bags. You can’t see through them, and you can’t smell what’s in them, either. They come with SmellSafe technology that is perfect for locking in aroma and maintaining the integrity of your stash.

When do I call the extraction team?

If you have multiple pounds of cannabis to store, you’re either a weed professional or you throw incredible parties. Either way, it’s time to consider processing your weed for better long-term storage. You can try your hand at making hash with a pollen press, or you can experiment with making extracts. While flower that’s gone stale in storage isn’t readily marketable, extracts and oils are nearly non-perishable and can be saved and used indefinitely.

If you’re a little nervous about making extracts that are actually safe for human consumption, it’s best to use a solventless approach. Solventless extraction methods use heat, pressure, and mechanical agitation to remove THC from your weed.

Presses, bubble bags, and even hot irons are all straightforward ways to make extracts at home and save your highs for another day. Solvent-based extracts are more complex and require some definite scientific know-how to get up and running. If you get to the point that you’re running a butane honey oil lab, give us a call. We’d like a tour.
