The association isn’t purely cultural either. In the medical community, cannabis can be prescribed to patients with anorexia caused by chemotherapy or other powerful drugs. Because nutrition is a priority for patients who are seriously ill, the potential downsides of cannabis are overlooked to ensure patients receive adequate caloric intake.

Given this strong association with appetite, it may be surprising to learn that daily cannabis use is not associated with weight gain. In fact, the opposite seems to be the case. Daily use of cannabis is associated with lower BMI and a lower risk of obesity and diabetes. This could be huge news for medical cannabis advocates, as obesity-related health conditions, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease are responsible for countless deaths and health expenses throughout the country.

Why do stoners eat more without gaining weight?

The research is too new to say for certain. Most studies examining the relationship between marijuana and weight are purely correlational, which means that researchers can establish that stoners are less likely to be obese, but unable to establish why that is the case. There could be many explanations.

One possibility is that using cannabis reduces stress. Because many people eat when they are stressed, people with high amounts of stress are more likely to eat more frequently than people who feel relaxed more often. Secondly, because the foods that most people seek out to regulate their emotions are often calorically dense and less satiating (such as packaged cookies, chips, ice cream, etc.), it may be the case that people who smoke less consume more calories on average than stoners, in spite of the munchies effect.

Another possibility is that stoners are more active than other groups. Frequent walks, bike rides, skating, rock climbing, and other activities that are popular with stoners may not be as popular with more sober populations. As a result, stoners may be able to eat more calories without gaining weight, as they use that energy to fuel their activities. Similarly, it may be that people who smoke frequently have fewer aches and pains, which allows them to be more active more frequently than others. The natural analgesic effect of marijuana can thereby encourage lower BMIs in people who smoke, by empowering them to hit the herb vape, then hit the treadmill.

Lastly, the answer may be that stoners are generally younger people, as people tend to smoke less as they age, for career and family-related reasons. Young people generally have less fat on their frame and gain weight as they age, making this another case of correlation (though it doesn’t necessarily signify causation).

Stoners drink less.

While many stoners love to get cross-faded, many cannabis users eschew alcohol entirely, or enjoy it in much more moderation than people who drink but do not smoke. Because stoners may be more likely to consume fewer alcoholic beverages, they consume fewer calories and gain less weight as they age than drinkers. Because alcohol is so calorically dense, avoiding even just a few drinks each week can mean stoners avoid hundreds or thousands of calories in their weekly diet. That effect adds up over the years, particularly as individuals age out of adolescence.

Weed may improve your metabolism.

Some research indicates that cannabis may improve your metabolism. Smoking can stimulate cannabinoid receptor 1, which helps control metabolism and appetite. As a result, smoking cannabis can alter the body’s metabolism and reduce the amount of fat stored in the body, which, in turn, lowers an individual’s BMI.

It’s worth noting that differences in metabolism are often tiny, which may have an effect on long-term weight gain and fat storage, but minimal effect on short-term differences in fat. In other words, even if weed speeds up your metabolism, changes in diet and activity level will still have much larger effects on your weight than small differences in metabolism.

Should I smoke more to lose weight?

While some evidence suggests a relationship between cannabis use and a lower BMI, there’s not enough data for any self-respecting health professional to suggest you start using cannabis as a weight-loss drug. However, if you feel that cannabis may help alleviate your stress, increase your activity level, or otherwise help you modify the number of calories you consume and use, it may be worth putting away the box of cookies and breaking out the box of kief.

The only evidence-based way to intentionally lower body fat is by adjusting the energy balance of your body, which is composed of the calories you consume and the calories your body burns as energy. If you are interested in losing body fat, consult with a doctor or dietitian to discuss effective strategies that fit your life.

But the truth is, some people require a little bit of herbal assistance to get through a day on the job. This is particularly true for jobs with little physical danger/coordination and repetitive, uninteresting labor. Anyone who has worked in an office sorting files or in a food service establishment knows exactly why they smoke on the job.

Still, how to do it? For the uninitiated, here are RYOT’s tips for a secret office smoke.

Step 1: Is Getting High a Good Decision?

Before you start sparking, you need to consider whether or not smoking on the job is a good idea for you. Will you be required to handle heavy machinery? Do you anticipate driving during the workday? Is there any chance that you or a coworker could be burned, cut, or otherwise maimed? If the answer is yes to any of these questions, you should probably stay sober at work. Sorry, bud.

If the answer is no and you have a reasonable expectation of safety, the next question to ask is whether you could face negative consequences from smoking on the job. If you are a licensed professional, such as a doctor, does smoking or popping hot on a drug test compromise your license? Does your company drug test at all? If so, you may need to consider finding another way to get through the day. We hear good things about coffee and snacking.

If you feel like there’s no risk to getting stoned (for example, you work in a restaurant and your boss is smoking with you), then proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Smoke on the Go

We love bongs and dab rigs, but these elaborate setups aren’t feasible in the hustle and bustle of the modern workday. You’ll have to move to some sort of cold European country if you want to live that slower pace of life. Instead, you want a way of getting stoned that’s quick, portable, and easy to use discreetly.

We recommend products like an herb vape or a one hitter. These tools are small enough to carry in your pocket, quick to use in just one hit, and require little to no clean up. Additionally, neither is likely to cause a smell problem that needs to be cleaned up.

Step 3: Clean up

If you are smoking flower, smell might be an issue to consider. A quick walk around the block or some body spray can help air out or cover the smell of weed radiating off your suddenly relaxed demeanor. You should also be sure to hide your stash and piece before returning to work. The whole “smoke secretly on the job” thing doesn’t typically work if you walk back into the office with your portable vaporizer or one hitter tucked behind your ear. Even a boss so unhip that their trousers are falling down can figure out what’s going on when you get that sloppy.

It would be a good idea to keep some cologne, eye drops, and a drink with you when you smoke, to mask the smell, red eyes, and weed breath that can happen as you smoke. Addressing these issues before returning to work keeps you completely inconspicuous. Do it right and people will just suspect you got a great cookie out of the break room vending machine.

Most of these patients end up smoking and gunking up their lungs with tar. Even though the jury's still out as to whether smoking cannabis is inevitably harmful, common sense dictates that filling your lungs up with smoke isn't ideal.

What’s most important to you about storing your stash? Do you want a gorgeous display case to show off your weed? Or are you trying to keep large volumes fresh for an extended time frame? Do you value portability or will your stash stay in one place? These kinds of questions narrow down the possible stash containers that would be best for your situation.

Once you have the answers, it’s time to start weighing your options and finding the best container for you. Some traits you may want to consider are: price, materials, size, and portability. We try to prioritize material as much as possible, as this will ultimately decide the quality of the container. Ziploc baggies, while cost-effective and highly portable, are simply not a quality container.

2) Protection

One of the key factors to consider is how much protection you need for your stash. For short-term storage, a glass jar with a lid is a convenient, accessible way to keep your weed fresh and on display.

If you’re looking for slightly more protection, you may consider storing your jars in a cannabis humidor. A humidor will protect your weed from light and maintain the humidity and temperature of your collection. This is a great option if you are storing your weed for longer amounts of time and want to maintain freshness as long as possible, but still want to keep your stash handy for easy smoking.

For long-term storage, air tight bags or other containers should be kept in a cool, dark place. With proper storage, weed can keep up to a year without losing its potency or smokability.

Does weed go bad?

Yes and no. It depends on the quality of the weed and how it was stored. Weed that has been fully cured/dried that’s stored in an airtight container can last nearly indefinitely. On the other hand, buds that aren’t fully cured or were exposed to moisture and were stored in a container that left them exposed…you may want to throw those buds out. Weed that’s damp and exposed creates an ideal environment for bacteria and mold to grow in, which means you definitely don’t want to smoke it.

Will I still get high?

Now we’re getting down to business. Yes, a weed that’s quite old will still get you high, though you may notice the potency drops off as time goes by. You may also notice that the quality of the high changes. This is due to the slow degradation of the terpenes and cannabinoid compounds that affect your high. As these chemical compounds diminish or become slightly altered, so will your high.

You will also notice a definite change in the flower’s texture and smokability. It may become more brittle and difficult to roll. This is usually due to the time the weed has spent drying out. In addition, old flowers will burn much more quickly, much hotter, and much more harshly than fresh flowers. A fine grind and packing your bowl, joint, or one-hitter tightly will keep it from burning quite so quickly, as you limit the amount of oxygen available to burn through your old weed. Tight packing also makes it more difficult to get a good draw as you smoke, so you may need to pull a little harder on your spliff, pipe, or bong.

We find that smoking old herbs works best through a cool, refreshing bong. It cools the smoke and takes away much of the harshness that comes with old, dried-out buds. Alternatively, you can throw it into an herb vape, which will simply convert the THC into vapor without combusting the herb itself. Using a portable vaporizer skips all the fuss while delivering the same high.

What’s the best way to store bud?

This depends on your intention. How much, bud, and for how long? Do you want to maintain the flower, or are you comfortable with extracts? How much work are you willing to do? If you just want to store a few grams while you’re away on a long vacation, an airtight stash container is the best way to seal in your weed’s freshness. Mason jars are popular, as they come in a variety of sizes and are easy to organize.

For large amounts of flower, such as ounces and pounds, it’s difficult to find airtight jars large enough to handle that kind of volume. Your best bet would be bags designed for long-term storage. You can use vacuum sealer machines and compatible bags, which are sold in most kitchen supply stores. These machines will remove any air from your stash and protect it from humidity, bacteria, and bugs. The downside to vacuum sealing is that the pressure tends to crush the flower, somewhat affecting the way it breaks down. On the other hand, flat, vacuum-sealed bags of weed are stackable and slide easily under beds or into pantries, drawers, and crawl spaces.
