Cannabis Cover-Up: 6 Ways to Get Rid of the Smell

Cannabis’ well-known skunky smell has been a tell-tale sign of potheads for years. To some, the smell is a welcome reminder of highs past, but to others, Mary Jane’s distinct perfume is more than a little off-putting.

As much as you might enjoy the aroma of some fresh bud, your neighbors, parents, friends, or coworkers might have opposite feelings. So what do you do? While no technique is 100% foolproof for keeping cannabis’ smell from sticking to your skin, clothes, and furniture, there are some pretty easy ways to prevent nosey noses from getting up in your business.

1. Store

How you store your cannabis not only keeps it safe and fresh, but it locks smells in where they belong. Gone are the days when Ziploc baggies were the preferred method for transport – now you have almost limitless options.

When you are in the market for a smell proof case, there are a couple of things to keep in mind. First, your stash doesn’t like sunlight, and it requires an airtight seal to preserve freshness. Cannabis prefers glass jars that live in a cool, dry, dark place or have a dark, UV-protection coating. Glass containers with a tight-fitting lid are the ideal short and long-term storage solution, especially if you keep them in one of our gorgeous wood stash boxes. These stash boxes come with humidity options, places to keep your cannabis accessories, and a secure lock to keep your stash safe.

For even more protection, you might want to store your jars in a smell proof bag. Smell proof bags come with odor-absorbing technology that locks in and neutralizes cannabis’ distinctive odor, so your seatmate doesn’t get blasted in the face when you open up your backpack. They also come with a lock for added security. Our odor proof bags come in all shapes and sizes, but if you’re looking for something incredibly portable, a keychain keeper will keep your flowers fresh, smell-free, and readily available for your next hit.

2. Cover Up

Of course, sometimes the only thing you can do is cover up the smell of your last smoke sesh. While you can definitely use incense as your cover of choice (it has been masking the scent of cannabis for centuries, after all), you can also use candles, air fresheners, and odor neutralizers to clear out the smell.

3. Be Sneaky

Puff, puff, pass is a sacred tradition among cannabis users, but sometimes all you want to do is smoke in a bit of privacy. While laying in your bed or sitting on the couch is preferable, you might find yourself with roommates who don’t enjoy the smell as much as you do, and that could lead to trouble. Smoking in the bathroom is an old trope, but sometimes it’s the only way to get a hit in private. One way to get rid of the smell fairly quickly is to light a wooden match as you exhale because the combustion from the match will cover up the smell of a hit. If you have access to a shower, having a shower smoke sesh can also cover up a lot of smoke smells because the odors get locked into the steam droplets and dissipate quickly.

4. Purify

Investing in a high-quality air purifier is another way to keep odors to a minimum. Not only do air purifiers eliminate common allergens, but they can also filter out smoke and other harsh smells. It’s worth noting that a top-notch air purifier will cost you a pretty penny, but it can also keep your place smelling fresher than several other methods.

5. Prevent

Perhaps the best way to hide the smell of cannabis is to prevent it in the first place. Smoking somewhere with plenty of ventilation is probably the best preventative measure you can take. Smoking outside or in an area with a cross breeze will sweep the odors out and away from you. Even opening two windows on the opposite side of the room and using a fan can help waft the smell out of your house.

6. Dry Herb Vaporizers

Using a dry herb vaporizer is another way to keep smoking odors at a minimum. Instead of combusting your weed the way smoking a joint would, a DHV heats the air around your bud, turning all of the delicious THC, CBD, and terpenes into a vapor. After you inhale and exhale, the remaining vapor dissipates almost immediately, leaving little to no smell behind.

No matter the reason you use cannabis, the smell isn’t for everybody. Heck, you might not even like the odor enough to keep sniffing it on your own clothes all day. By taking some preventative measures or smoking in a conscientious way, no one has to be the wiser regarding your last hit.
